Colposcopy

What is colposcopy?

A colposcope is an optical device used for the early detection of cervical cancer and precancerous conditions. The procedure performed using this device is called colposcopy. The goal of this examination is not only to detect pathologies on the cervix but also to target biopsy sampling from these abnormal areas. Without the use of the colposcope, biopsy results may be inaccurate. The third goal of the procedure is to correctly determine the treatment strategy for the identified conditions, i.e., deciding whether to pursue conservative or surgical treatment.

Is colposcopy painful?

Colposcopy is a non-invasive, completely painless procedure. After applying a solution to the cervix, the area is magnified several times, and the examination is performed from a distance. The method has no side effects and is safe. However, if a biopsy is required during the colposcopy, there may be a slight feeling of discomfort or pain.

What is considered during colposcopy?

Colposcopy can be performed on any day before or after menstruation, but it is not recommended during menstruation. If there is an acute inflammation, treatment should be completed first, and only then should the examination be carried out. In women who are in menopause or after an oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), a deficiency of the female hormone estrogen can lead to vaginal mucosal atrophy, which reduces the informativeness of the procedure. In such cases, appropriate treatment should be done first, and only then should colposcopy be performed.

What should be taken into account after colposcopy?

After the procedure, patients typically experience no discomfort. However, if a biopsy was taken during the colposcopy, some side effects may occur. It is normal to have slight bloody discharge during the first week after the biopsy. If, however, bleeding starts, it is important to contact a doctor. Additionally, if there is any unpleasant discharge, pain, or an increase in body temperature, it is necessary to immediately inform the doctor.
